Christie Declares He Would Not Approve Six-Week Abortion Ban if Elected President

Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie stated that he would not sign a six-week federal abortion ban into law. He expressed his refusal on CNN, stating that the decision to put this matter in the hands of the people was fought for over 50 years, and it should not be taken away by the federal government. Christie also expressed that there is no national consensus on a six-week abortion ban.

This statement arose during a discussion about fellow Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley’s stance on the issue. Haley had previously mentioned that she would have signed a six-week abortion ban in South Carolina while she was governor.

Christie also commented on the potential impact of Haley’s stance on her electability, suggesting that it could cause difficulties for her in a general election. He emphasized the importance of having the people, rather than politicians, make this decision.

The topic of abortion has been prominent in this election cycle following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, which led to the loss of the constitutional right to abortion. Since then, 14 states have enacted near-total bans on abortion after approximately six weeks.

While stating his personal belief as being pro-life, Christie emphasized the importance of allowing individuals to make their own choices in this matter, rather than leaving it in the hands of politicians.
