New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez remains defiant in the face of federal bribery charges, stating that he has no plans to resign. Speaking to his Senate Democratic colleagues behind closed doors, Menendez reaffirmed his denial of wrongdoing and his commitment to fight the charges. Despite more than half of Democratic senators calling for his resignation, Menendez’s remarks did not win him any new allies.
Sen. Michael Bennet, who has called on Menendez to step down, stated that his mind has not changed after the meeting. Other senators, like Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and Sen. Ben Cardin, also suggested that Menendez’s remarks did not sway their opinions. Menendez did not disclose whether he plans to run for re-election next year.
The indictment accuses Menendez and his wife, Nadine, of using his position to aid the government of Egypt and pressure federal prosecutors to drop a case against a friend. They allegedly received bribes, including gold bars, a luxury car, and cash from New Jersey businessmen. Menendez pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Despite the bribery allegations, Menendez remains determined to stay in office, and his political future is uncertain. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer hinted at this uncertainty, stating that they will see what happens after Menendez’s speech at the meeting. The head of Senate Democrats’ campaign arm has called on Menendez to resign, indicating that he may not receive traditional campaign assistance.
