North Carolina Coast Experiences Heavy Wind and Rain as Tropical Storm Ophelia Moves Inland

Tropical Storm Ophelia has reached the North Carolina coast, causing heavy wind, rain, and dangerous surges of water. The storm made landfall near Emerald Isle early Saturday morning with winds of 70 mph, leaving tens of thousands of homes and businesses without power. It is expected to weaken as it moves north and then northeast on Sunday.

The storm is forecasted to bring up to 7 inches of rain in parts of North Carolina and Virginia, with 2 to 4 inches in the rest of the mid-Atlantic region. There is also a storm surge warning in effect, with surges between 4 and 6 feet predicted in some areas. Governors of North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland have declared a state of emergency, and some schools and events have been canceled.

The North Carolina Ferry System has suspended service on all routes until conditions improve. Residents are encouraged to prepare emergency kits and follow weather forecasts closely. Maryland expects an extended period of strong winds, heavy rainfall, and elevated tides.

Local residents in Annapolis, Maryland are taking precautions by picking up sandbags and securing their boats. Annapolis water taxi service has been closed for the duration of the storm. National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan said it is not uncommon for tropical storms or hurricanes to develop off the East Coast.
