FEMA Deputy Administrator Highlights Hawaii’s Recovery Progress and Previews President Biden’s Visit to Maui

FEMA Deputy Administrator, Deanne Criswell, praised the recovery efforts in Hawaii ahead of President Biden’s upcoming visit to Maui. She stated that the President will witness the devastating impact of the wildfires in Lahaina, where nearly 100 people lost their lives. Additionally, he will observe the progress made by FEMA and other agencies in the ongoing recovery process after signing a federal disaster declaration.

According to Criswell, President Biden’s presence in Maui will provide reassurance to the affected community, as he stands with them alongside the First Lady. She emphasized that the federal government is fully committed to supporting the recovery efforts in Hawaii.

This will be President Biden’s first visit to Maui, following criticism of the administration’s response. Criswell commended the actions taken by the President and expressed that the recovery efforts are moving in the right direction.

Since the federal disaster declaration, the Biden administration has dispatched 1,000 federal workers and 450 search and rescue team members to Maui County. Criswell mentioned that these teams have covered approximately 60% of the affected area.

Furthermore, FEMA and the Red Cross have been working together to secure hotel accommodations for displaced individuals, leading to a significant reduction in the number of people staying in shelters.

The Biden administration has authorized over $7 million in assistance for those impacted by the fires. Additionally, the federal cost share for Hawaii’s disaster funding has been increased from 75% to 100%.

Looking ahead, FEMA and other agencies are preparing for debris removal, which Criswell identified as the next phase of the recovery process.

Criswell concluded by stating that progress is being made, and they will continue to support the people of Hawaii every step of the way.
